Struggling To Cut Out Refined Sugar From Your Morning Coffee? Read This

We all know how difficult starting your day without your classic cup of coffee can be. But what you may not realize that while refreshing you for the day ahead, your morning cuppa may be harmfully contributing to your calorie count and overall health.

Have you considered how much refined sugar might be in your morning coffee and how much that may be harming you? Maybe that’s why your weight is fluctuating despite all your best efforts, or why you may be experiencing a mid-morning energy crash at work.

Don’t panic. If you can’t stomach a black coffee or your morning caffeine rush without a dose of sweetness, rest assured that there are several alternatives to refined sugar for your morning beverage. And there’s a lot more research and reading you can do that might turn you off consuming sugar in your coffee forever – once you know the truth!

  1. Try out sugar substitutes: if you can’t handle the taste of your coffee without some sweetness, consider these healthier alternatives you could use instead of refined sugar. Items like cinnamon increase sweetness while giving your immune system a boost. Meanwhile, changing up the milk you use to a nut milk or coconut milk will give your coffee a creamier, full-bodied feel than normal that will lessen the need for sugar. Coconut milk in particular is on the sweeter side, further decreasing any desire for added sugar. Additionally, a few drops of vanilla or almond extract will add a sweet kick to your coffee too. Finally, instead of consuming a rich mocha, opt instead for a small amount of unsweetened cocoa/cacao powder, stirred into the coffee or the grounds before brewing, giving your beverage a chocolatey feeling without the extra calories.
  1. Get Informed: Knowing the right information can you wake you up to the realities of what your sugar consumption is doing to your body. By reading more and getting informed, you will naturally start progressing towards better health choices, and it will become easier to make the right decisions that your body needs.

For instance, check this out: CNN recently reported that “A drink you buy at Starbucks could contain up to 25 teaspoons of sugar per serving...That’s three times the amount of sugar in one can of Coke, and more than three times the maximum adult daily intake recommended by the American Heart Association…. When you are consuming sugar in hot drinks, it’s easy to drink a large volume of liquid in a short time, and any sugar it contains is very rapidly absorbed into the body. It would, for example, be much harder to consume the same amount of sugar if it was in the form of rice. It’s one of the particular problems with sugary hot drinks… “you have a spike in sugar levels in the blood — and as everyone knows, what goes up must come down. The pancreas releases lots of insulin in response. A very high rise and rapid fall of sugar in the bloodstream may be bad for health – it may put you at risk… of laying down of fat under the skin and, more worryingly, in the guts, liver and pancreas.”

A fact like that can make you think twice when you reach for the sugar jar and walk into Starbucks the next morning. Start doing your research and get amazed.

If you are used to consuming hyper-sweetened coffee beverages from coffee shops or even from your own kitchen, implementing these changes can take a bit of time to get used to. But press on! Once you start reading up more on the effects of refined sugar in hot drinks, and start slowly implementing healthier substitutes, your body will gradually switch over to start craving them instead. All for the betterment of your health!
