What drinks must be avoided when you are on blood thinners?

Certain medical conditions, like congenital heart defects, may require blood-thinning medications to reduce their risk of a heart attack or stroke. While leafy greens like spinach or green tea have always been considered healthy for most folks with a diet, these foods can interfere with the body's ability to stop bleeding altogether when it needs to. Especially patients on blood-thinning medications should avoid vitamin K rich food items such as green tea because they may counteract the effects of their medication.

However, before you drop these drinks, you must speak with your doctor about any potential risks.

Green Tea

Green tea is a beverage that people drink to keep healthy. It’s also good for your skin and can help with weight loss! On the other hand, it may be dangerous if you take Warfarin or Coumadin because green tea slows blood clotting in those who have been prescribed these drugs due to their high risk of bleeding.

Cranberry Juice

The health benefits of cranberry juice are well-established, but be careful if you're on a blood thinner. Just as with other sources of potassium from food and supplements, cranberries can increase the risk for bleeding when taken along with blood-thinning drugs.

Alcohol

Alcohol impacts the time it takes for your blood to clot and increases risk factors like falling and injury. Blood thinners make it more difficult to stop bleeding in case you get hurt while drinking alcohol; you've been warned!

Grapefruit

Grapefruit is a delicious fruit that's great for your health! However, it contains compounds that can offset the work of blood thinners, and eating grapefruit or drinking its juice may lead to bleeding.

When you are prescribed blood thinners, it is important to ask your doctor about what foods should be avoided. Apart from the ones mentioned above, even cheese, eggs, mayonnaise and many more foods are on this list.

These items can make the effects of the medication less effective or dangerous for heart patients.
